There’s a side A : Baby I Wish I’d Been A Better Pop Star, Song Of Life, ULTRAKEEF, Gloria Grahame and Your Masters.

Baby I Wish I’d Been A Better Pop Star first appeared as it does on Side Z with me playing all the instruments (except for Clare Moore on drums). Clare suggested we do it with the mistLY and it came over all swinging and bright with pounding toms, pop oomph and zinging twelve string guitars. That was the idea of the album, to have songs done in different styles and tempos.
Song Of Life is the title track, in a way. The chorus has the line “ZIPPA DEEDOO WHAT IS/WAS THAT/THIS?”. Song Of Life was recorded and released in February 2018, an extended version of that original, clean and very pop version appears on Side Z of the album. We started playing it with the mistLY and it sounded great so we wanted to do it again.Words written while I lay in a hospital bed after an appendix operation. Thoughts naturally drift to an overview of your entire life.

ULTRAKEEF began with a rough demo of a couple of slurred block chords and an idea to set them against a cowbell heavy beat. Then to tell a story within those confines of a badass rock’n’roll myth. To take that myth to the nth and push it over the edge of the falls. It helps if you are versed in the lore of the Stones, a popular beat group that came straight out of Dartford in the UK. This track was mixed by Idge at Soundpark.


  

Gloria Grahame (fuck or die), another tale of showbiz chutzpah and flash. They’ve all got it. Infamy! A film actor who was wild in private life and lived even hotter in underworld gossip. She did it her way. Great films like The Big Heat with Lee Marvin and In A Lonely Place with HumphreyBogart. Originally recorded and released in April 2018 with me playing keys over a one chord beat I glitched up one day, I started to fool around with open tuning and  a slide guitar on my archtop guitar and a live performance in Canberra late 2018 saw Coral Snake Robin Casinader jump onto the bandstand with us to play some synth over the G chord and the loping beat. We added some sounds to it in the studio
(good enough for Lou Reed on Street Hassle) and we had another kind of song.

Your Masters was originally written and recorded for The Dave Graney Show album in 1998 in repsonse to John Howards election as PM and his invention of a group of blue collar “battlers” whom he dubbed “aspirationals”.
Then he was re-elected another three times. Started playing the song again and it kept staying relevant. The chorus says “you know they’ll never let you in”

There’s a side B: Is That What You Did?  Where’s My Buzz? and You’re All Wrong.
The idea of the album was to have songs done in different styles and tempos. The two longest tracks, Is That What You Did? and Where’s My Buzz? seemed to be pieces that would always be different. There would never be a perfect version, just different ones.

When I say “the “sou’westing ballroom jam” that is the eight minute plus “Is That What You Did?” I mean to say its springing from my youthful immersion in Southern Rock (Allman Brothers/ Lynyrd Skynyrd) and West Coast jams like the Grateful Deads DARK STAR. Of course, I loved The Blue Oyster Cult , Doors and Television as well.
I’m saying that’s where I was aiming for us to stray near to.
Lyrically? It stems from people asking me after shows - or even during shows whether what I was doing is what I did. What they’d heard that I did or was supposed to have done. Was that it?

The soft fusion chordal folding trick that is “Where’s My Buzz?” .
Yes, this song has a lot of chords but it flows. Wonderful playing from everybody on this track. Also wonderfully recorded by Idge. I guess this has some “yacht rock nods” . There’s a few songs on the album that pose questions.
This is a legitimate question. Of the universe. Where Is My Buzz?
Originally released digitally in April 2018 and remixed/remastered in a slightly longer version here. I discovered open tuning and a slide for my archtop guitar and a whole bunch of songs stole out of it. More to come. “You’re all wrong – not everybody – just you –  but all of you – you’re all wrong…”

The song celebrates her cold power and resilience and enigmatic, restless persona. It touches on an apocryphal incident where, as they watched a couple having sex in a hotel room, she allegedly pulled a gun on husband Nicholas Ray and gave him the choice, fuck or die?”
I brought Is that What You Did? to rehearsal a couple of years ago but this was it’s time to come together. presented here in two different versions. Different takes altogether. This is the alternate take. It’ll always be an alternate take whenever we play this song.A bit faster? Looser.
Where’s My Buzz? is more of a chordal avalanche, a blues-jazz cri de cour. Two different takes, both snaking out over seven minutes in length.
It asks all the relevant questions, the buzzing questions.

There is wise blood flowing through “Song Of Life” and “Your Masters”. (The latter being a re-recording of a song originally realized in 1998 with the Dave Graney Show). ULTRAKEEF is a song from our album ZIPPA DEEDOO WHAT IS/WAS THAT/THIS?
I made a rough demo of it with Clare Moore a couple of years ago. The only idea was to have a cowbell ringing in the beat and the block chords just seemed to write themselves into place. It's mainly in E and then moves to a D for a change and then to A7.

We just knew it should be spaced out and to let the words tell a story.

The story was inspired by all the goofy, dopey guitarists (mainly) that we have known or watched from a distance as they aspired to live DOWN to the badass image of a pirate-guitar slinger as most famously thrown by KEEF aka Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. So many have DIED trying to be as bad as KEEF is reputed to be.

I was very impressed when I read in his book how he never eats at meal times or sleeps at normal times. He eats when hungry or sleeps when tired. That was more impressive than all the much talked of and seemingly heroic drug taking and boozing.

I never got into rock music for that stuff. I came from a very hedonistic family and a very hedonistic culture. I didn't need to get into rock music to get wasted. And nothing I ever saw in that world was as wild or carefree as the country stoners and hot rod crazy football playing mill workers I grew up with.
But I was impressed that Keith - KEEF - made the world bend to his leanings from early on. He made his rules.

We rehearsed the song with Stu Thomas and Stuart Perera and they brought a real lot of groove to it. We played it a few times during our Croxton residencies last year and people really clicked with it , immediately.
We put it down all together in at Soundpark studios and thought we'd do a  clip for it.

Donna McRae and Michael Vale are two film makers Clare Moore and I have worked with, doing the soundtracks on their films Johnny Ghost and Lost Gully Road. They had previously done a clip for Clare Moores band The Dames.

They asked us for a few ideas and we suggested a few approaches and we came up with this clip. It contains nods/references/traces of a certain 1974 clip from the Rolling Stones. I'll leave it up to the reader to guess which one.

The clip has aired two weeks in a row (very late/early in the morning) on the ABC tv show Rage and people have responded quickly to it. Even tyre kickers wandering on to the comments section of Youtube to tell me that "the lyrics are bad" and I'm "phoning in the vocal". People have funny ideas about what musicians and songwriters do and why they do anything! Also, the two commenters (most people have been much more positive but its a weird truism that you focus on negative things much too much) both said they were "fans of (my) work. If I was a fan of somebody I would never - ever - come  to tell them what I thought of it. Especially when it was still jumping on the plate! I would just enjoy it as it happened. Something else from the source of something I liked.....

 Okay, there is no book on how to be a good pop star. Are there any good pop stars around? I don't really know.

People have low standards nowadays. A veteran music production friend said to me last night, "what will Ed Sheeran's legacy be? Some big grossing gigs in stadiums, but what standards did he set of his own?"

In my opinion ( I was going to say experience but realized it's never really been a situation for me), to be a pop star you need to be in the middle of a working, coherent music business that is all fussing and dancing around you. And it is only momentarily coherent because of you. Otherwise its just a chaotic scrum.

Personal taste comes into it. As does some sort of generational attitude.

Is a good pop star someone who obeys all the rules and inhabits the recognized forms of music and behaviour the best? Say, all the boys in One Direction? 
Or is it the opposite? Jim Morrison?

I have to say I prefer unruly bastards.

Jim Morrison, Hank Williams, Tupac, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Norious B.I.G, Lil Wayne.

Do they work quietly and self sufficiently or create a whole lot of problems that require constant attention from people working for them? Again, in my experience, when I've seen people working with large record companies, (Probably don't exist any more in that style - lots of people involved)  its the latter. People need something to do and a feeling that they are helping to shape something.

A pop star has to be massively poular, in my humble opinion. Across the board access to young minds.

Jim Morrison was that. Shaun Ryder and Kurt Cobain.

Do they thank everybody or say "fuck you" to everybody?  Again, I think the latter is best, though Elvis presley had great manners.

For women, all this is much harder to read. A much smaller gallery of archetypes to draw from. Everybody judges them on a broader societal scale. Drunkenness, druggery and sexual promiscuity. Where is Janis Joplin when people talk about and reissue music by Hendrix, Brian Jones, Tim Buckley, Kurt? And age is harsh on female performers more than their male counterparts. There are few female versions of Van Morrison or David Crosby or Neil Young. 

Pop stars I have enjoyed watching and listening to. (as opposed to other kinds of musicians who are my main interest).
Sophie Ellis Bextor, Womack and Womack, the Sex Pistols, Bryan Ferry, Nick Cave, Alexander O'Neal, Mental As Anything, Dragon (Marc Hunter), Steve Winwood, Steely Dan, The Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs, Ms Dynamite, Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, The Beastie Boys, The Cruel Sea, Estelle, Tupac, Lil Wayne, Mark Morrison, Curtis Mayfield, Slade, T Rex, The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, The Byrds, the Who. AND MANY MORE!

ZIPPA DEEDOO - album coming in late March

We recorded some songs at our favourite studio, Soundpark, with our favourite engineer, Idge, in July last year and its taken shape as an album that'll be coming out in late March to be called ZIPPA DEEDOO WHAT IS/WAS THAT/THIS?
The title comes from the chorus of one of the tunes, SONG OF LIFE. 


It's a  rock'n'roll  album, but our kind of rock'n'roll which is peculiar in some ways but mostly pretty normal in many others.
I realized recently that we have always behaved in a more wide open or transparent manner than most rock acts. I heard someone talking of being in an inner cty "bubble" or "indie bubble" and realized we'd never been inside some sort of clique or enclave.

Even in that old Seaview Ballroom scene myself and Clare Moore were probably the "least likely to" of that crowd to ever even cut a  record. We were rubes! Hicks from out of town.
Well you know how it is with people that peak too early...

So we never pitched our stuff out from inside a cosy corner with a bunch of like minded types. We've always been kind of outside the general flow of arguments. If I cover a song by another artist I always like to do big hits, I can't be fooling about with underground rumours. We have also always travelled out to regional areas to play, preferring the sticks to the inner city for the most parts.

So this is a rock'n'roll album if you grew up in the world of classic rock. Which included classic AM radio pop (disco and country) and punk. Not a niche world of rock. More wide open.

So we are launching this with a single March 15th at the Kastoria Club in Coburg. We did a clip for ULTRAKEEF  with Donna McRae and Michael Vale which is pretty amazing and that'll be out around the same time.In the photo below, Donna (with whom we worked on for Lost Gully Road and Johnny Ghost) is next to Stu Perera in the front, Michael Vale is holding a balloon at the back on the right and Director of Photography Lazslo is acting strange with his improvised antennae on the left at the back.

 

The song itself is so full of expletives that we thought we should also have something else to perhaps approach radio with so we are leading with Baby I Wish I'd Been A Better Pop Star which will be at iTunes March 1st.

I have also been looking to do some Parlour Gigs but its seems I am not Parlour Material. Though I'm still determined to give it  a shake.

WHEN THE WEIRD CAN'T GET GOING.

Where can people go to get weird? We used to have Kings Cross but even the gangsters have realized that dope and sex pale to insignificance when considered in relation to real estate .

Maybe now that sex, dope and gambling are right there in everybody’s computers and phones; right in their homes or at least in the palms of their hands in the back of a taxi or bus; maybe, they don’t need to go anywhere to get weird?

Perhaps they/we need a place to go to straighten out then. Just as good. “Love and hate are both horns on the same goat!” yelled Kirk Douglas in the epic movie, “The Vikings”.

I’m in showbusiness. I know show people. If they’re any good, they’re completely off the scale of freakiness. It goes with the territory. You can only wander onto your own stage. You have to have gone off for a piss and a look around early on. Some of these show people are in hiding, ones I see pretty regularly. Some mightn’t have “made show” in years. They’re still show people. Nobody ever asks us how anything works. Things like the gig economy. We watched them jump off the cliff.

Show people, at best – carny folk. Watch your stuff! Can you believe there is actual talk about “having conversations” about mental illness in the music scene? Have they not heard of the blues? Blue notes? Blue Note itself? one of the greatest jazz labels of all time? Syd Barrett? Roky Erikson? Bud Powell? Charlie Parker? Hank Williams? Thelonius Monk? Sandy Denny? Judy Garland? Judee Sill? Laura Nyro? Billy Holliday? Nick Drake? Joe Meek? Jim Morrison? Brian Jones? Tragic, thrilling villains, clowns  and gods, all of them.

William Burroughs wrote about a place called Johnson in one of his later books.

“In this world of shabby rooming houses, furtive gray figures in dark suits, hop joints and chili parlors the Johnson Family took shape as a code of conduct. To say someone is a Johnson means he keeps his word and honours his obligations. He's a good man to have on your team. He is not a malicious, snooping, interfering self righteous trouble making person. - The Place of Dead Roads (1983)

He was writing about retired show people, all coming to one town when they finally hung up their tired old scams. That’d be nice.

Burroughs last series of books were great to read as they came out in the 80s. He seemed to be squaring up his entire written narrative with an 18^th century novel (Cities Of the Red Night), and then 19^th (The Place Of Dead Roads) and 20^th century (The Western Lands) narratives. What a character Burroughs was! Can you imagine him being present in todays thin and super sensitive public realm? He’d have to be introduced and defined to the bored and uninterested audience as it paraded by, scrolling the world on their screens. What would they choose to better see him by? What narrow window to better frame him? His drug of choice? His having murdered his first wife? Him being an heir to the Burroughs adding machine accounts? His description of women as being “a curse” or “two hole freaks”?

Perhaps he’d just finally break into a sweat and pull out his guns and start shooting apparent media workers as they camped outside his small town window? That’d be something everybody could understand.

What an everyday world it seemed, that could contain a presence like Burroughs. And his British counterpart JG Ballard with his typewriter and gin and tonics in suburban Shepparton, outside London, writing the world up in even more thrilling , cold, sleek and beguiling veins of living possibilities. They wrote of “sexual homecomings”, languages being viruses from outer space, diseases in time, manias and every kind of sex unimaginable. Their words inspired several rock bands names as well, in Burroughs case, as the term “Heavy Metal” itself and many movies. There is a very well understood 21^st Century adejective – Ballardian -  which is shorthand for a whole cultural moment. And its never really describing anything nice.

Those two were wise to danger and over exposure and kept their powder dry and its threatening power sharp for the duration of their times on earth. Characters like Hunter S Thompson and Tom Wolfe had some fierce windows of heat for a while but each was easily swallowed by the very world they set out to describe. It turned back on them like a stormy twister and sucked them in and off something shocking.

Michelle Houllebecq is a twenty first century man of words who could be said to be of comparable stature. He seems to be able write of things that then eventuate in images on tv and telephone screens and newspaper opinion pieces. They walk off the page and off the set, quickly.

Its hard for writers or players to be superbad nowadays though. How could you be worse than any of the political figures and their mobs in power in the USA or the UK or Australia. I mean, even if you had access to all sorts of drugs that could blitz your brain or glam your eyes or give you the general whim whams AND a crew of people to catch you when you fell and mop your brow as you encountered intense swells in the aether, these people would be sure to harsh your buzz. Their sheer shittiness has sharp and tangy cut through. They would sober you up. And there’s nowhere you could go to get weird? Isn’t that the saddest thing? This is where I’m leaving you readers. In the shitdom. The fouled lattitudes. When the weird can’t get going cos the going can’t get weird.

 Our October shows in NSW and Canberra were all packed and so enjoyable. Thanks to everybody who came along in Coogee, Marrickville, Hardys Bay and Canberra. Robin Casinader joined us for the latter and we had a great time. He has been in Melbourne to play his own dates and has one more November 22nd at the Open Studio in High St Northcote.

I then did 5 dates in QLD in 3 days with Clare Moore.
Firstly we played at the Bison Bar in nambour, a wonderful venue run by real qualitymusic people. Pete has the fruitiest vinyl record stash that he "djs". Pre breakthrough ABC, RACEY, Nik Krewshaw, Kim Wilde. Pete also plays in the quite briliant SHIFTING SANDS. (There is another SHIFTING SANDS who hail from Dunedin in New Zealand and I got to say they are pretty amazing too).

We did the Bison bar show with Clare on keys and vocals and me on acoustic and electric guitar.

We then did 4pm and 7pm shows at the Junk Bar in Brisbane. Clare borrowed a beautiful set of vibes from Kym who plays in THE VIEW FROMS MADELEINE'S COUCH.

We played a lot of fresh songs and included a Stone's cover (Time Waits For No One) and a Go Betweens one that we'd learned for the recent  16 Lovers Lane show (Twin layers Of Lightning). The latter was fun to do with old friend Robert Forster standing in the room.

 

Hardys Bay NSW Oct 2018.

Recording and mixing almost completed for the first of two  albums slated for release in 2019.The first off the rank will be a Dave Graney and the mistLY album. Titled ZIP A DEE DOO What Is/Was/That/This?
It features ULTRAKEEF, Is that What You Did?, Where's My Buzz?, Your Masters, Song Of Life, Gloria Grahame (both re-recorded), Baby I Wish I'd been a Better Pop Star and some more surprises.

There will be alternate takes of several songs as well as original versions of those previously released as digital tracks. (Though those will also be remastered and remixed)

Double J played a wild 1991 recording of Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes live at the Prince Of Wales. (This show was released as LURE OF THE TROPICS in 1992. Mostly improvised and with Robin Casinader playing on a sparking old Leslie speakered Hammond organ that was found on the stage and too heavy to move. They were opening for an acoustic Bob Mould. Great luck that the ABC truck was there and had so many tracks left free to record the whole band.
