In this video I tried to talk about LABURNUM OF THE MIND without overly explaining anything.
Our Laburnum Of The Mind album tour started in April and here is an update on where we went (after the last and what happened and how we did it and where we are going next.
This video is built up from lots of photos and video of the LABURNUM OF THE MIND recording session.
Friday
May
15th – Murray Delta Juke Joint, Goolwa.
Saturday May 16th - the Wheaty in Adelaide.
I wrote about these shows here.
I love these venues. The Murray Delta might be moving, a dream gig built up by a couple of wise crew/tech people. Great place to play an hour or so from Adelaide.
Sunday
May 31st Sunday – Young St Tavern, Frankston. A Sunday afternoon show in a suburb people have often spoken about with fear in their minds. It was tough in the 70s. Bay side Melbourne. The venue run by the drummer for Something For Kate. Hada great time. Then strangely lost my voice straight after the gig. Weird. I blame it on the hot, salty fires I had before performing.
Thursday June 4th – Smiths, Canberra. A nice crowd on a Thursday night in the nations capitol. Always a pleasure to play there. All these shows were with Stu Thomas on bass and Stuart Perera on guitar.
Friday June 5th - Marrickville Bowlo NSW. We wanted rock venues and this was one. They even had a meat raffle before we played. A kind of ironic meat raffle but a meat raffle all the same. Was great to play in a rock room in Sydney.
While waiting around to play, I asked everybody about their clothes choices.
Saturday June 6th - the Heritage, Bulli NSW. Unsure what venue to play in the Wollongong area. Nice to play but not a big turnout of people.
Friday June 12th – the Link and Pin, Woy Woy NSW.
A ferocious, in your face rock gig on the Central Coast. I mean that in a good way. We were down on the floor and people were dancing. It was a Friday night, after all.
Saturday June 13th – Stag and Hunter, Newcastle. Always love playing in Newcastle and at this venue.

Sunday June 14th – The Flow Bar, Old Bar NSW . We had to get up very early to drive to Old Bar on the Central Coast. Also had to play quietly so Clare sourced a micro bass drum for the show.

A few hours to kill in Brunswick Heads, I asked everybody about books, films and records.
Sunday July 12th – Mullum Roots Festival, NSW . Amazing festivaal that took over the main street. We played in a pub on one night, following Bill Chambers, and then in the hall on the next night. Had a fantastiuc time of it. Mental As Anything - led in 2026 by Reg Mobassa and Pete O'Doherty who left the ship 30 years ago - were superb. So many hits. Also caught ARCHER who was disturbingly excellent.
Peter Milton Walsh aka The Apartments, was one of the singers. He gave Mick Harvey hell.
I did some songs with Rod Hayward on guitar.All the other music was played with a big band.
Dave Last (Once of the Legandary Boy Kings) was in attendance.
Friday July 24th Courthouse Theatre – Geelong . Great little theatre room ina heritage building in the middle of Geelong.
Saturday July 25th, Shotkickers, Melbourne. Pic Sarah Sparks. We wanted to do a rock show in Melbourne so we booked a rock venue.

Friday July 31st Banshees Ipswich. Excellent venue, lovely crowd
Saturday August 1st - Eudlo Hall, QLD. Excellent venue run by a group of very smart women. Cakes and soup and wine on sale. PA supplied a guitar cabinet for me. A beautiful sounding MESA box.

Sunday August 2nd Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane . This was a Sunday afternoon in the valley. The best time to have a gig in that area. A nice, sunny day. People showed up! Most saying they hadn't been to the venue for a decade. (It has had several names over the years, a great room). Backline supplied. They had a sound guy and a bar person who did the door as well. Somehow it all worked.

Dramatic
night. Van broke down on the Eastern Freeway on the way to a gig . Rode
with the tow truck to the closed mechanics. Got a lift to the venue and
arrived ten minutes before showtime. Thanks for a great night out in
the end, Henry Wagons . He was doing a series of conversation and music shows at Kew Court House. A lovely venue. The van was written off.
Then we somehow fitted all our gear into a courtesy car we got from our mechanic. A Ford Laser! We drove to the Cosmopolitan in Trentham and played a duo show. Vibes, keys, rhythm machine and guitar. Two sets.
The next day we drove the Ford Laser to Somers, Victoria where we played in a room that was made of mud brick so people could sit in tiered seats and watch native birds that flew about on the other side of the large windows. ALl within the grounds of a heritage building and acreage.
August 28th – The Duke Of George, Fremantle WA
August 29th – Lyrics Lane – Perth, WA
We played these shows with Martyn Casey on bass. We rehearsed on the Thursday and played on the Friday and Saturday. Also, I plugged by small Vox MV50 head directly into the PA for both shows.

One
of the last times we played in Melbourne, writer David Pepperell had
this to say about our show...
"Last week I had the
great pleasure of seeing the witty, urbane and totally delightful
Dave Graney and Band at the Ember Room in the wilds of St. Kilda. It
was a total musical experience involving Dave's erudite,
observational songs - perhaps even fables in the style of Aesop -
plus playing that was really a tickle to the ear. Dave performs his
compositions with such elan and sophistication that he draws you into
his world and holds you there until the last note of the night.
Singer-Songwriters often seem self-obsessed but to me Dave sings
about a world he would like to live in and possibly thinks by singing
said songs he could bring that about. He sings well too - and his
guitar playing was exemplary all through the show. Stuart Perera’s
perfectly aligned Rickenbercker playing, smooth bassist Stu Thomas
and his very charming wife Clare Moore on drums provided him with a
solid foundation to elucidate his dreams and inspirations - songs
with character and belief plus a very wry view of this maybe
crumbling world. Dave is a gem, polished to a high sheen, rare in the
current charivari that one has to endure when sampling the music
scene these days. He is not to be missed - I have not had such a
pleasurable night out in years. He is certainly at his peak now after
battling around the traps for some years - get out and see him while
he still takes such enjoyment in presenting his creations to you
all".
