It was a really challenging but very enjoyable couple of months. We might just go back in September.

In some ways it felt like the early 90s for me. Each week we would go and eat with friends after the show and relax. Just like we used to do back then, only this time were were eating Mexican in Thornbury and then - 25 years ago - it was Italian in St Kilda.

Now we plan to do some recording of the songs we have been playing live, ULTRAKEEF, IS THAT WHAT YOU DID? and another we have cooking called WHERE'S MY BUZZ?
I have recorded a track with Clare called YOU'VE BEEN IN MY MIND and we are going to also put down HELL IS YOU, BABE.
I have also done some on my own, YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR BOOGIE, OLD FRIENDS, ET TU DOUDOU and BABY, I WISH I'D BEEN A BETTER POP STAR. I started doing the latter all by myself and it sounded kooky but I thought it would be better to do it with the mistLY.
I hope to have an album out before the end of the year.

In other news, we have some dates coming up in Croydon, Ballarat and Adelaide. I'll also be doing some events as a part of the Melbourne Writers Festival in September.

July 2nd - Dave Graney is part of an event at the Atheneum (but by the Wheeler centre) in Melbourne which is all about New York.As in "whats so good/bad about it".

I am six kilos lighter than at the start of the year , mainly due to eating better. Almost approaching the same weight I was in 1978.

I just finished LANDLOCKED by Doris Lessing, number four in her incredible five novel sequence called CHILDREN OF VIOLENCE.  Amazing writing set in Southern Africa during WW2 and after, mostly about the constraints that were upon women of that time being able to express themselves as distinct people in any way in public life. As in all her books set in that area, there are always the Africans present- all the time. Reducing all the problems and affairs of the colonial whites to almost nothing.

After the Moodists finished I sat around listening to a lot of music and got a feeling for singer songwriters. But not the acoustic types, more East Coast USA electric singers and songwriters who often had bands. Thats what I wanted to do when we started Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes in London.

We have also played with Thomas Hugh Vecera, Lisa Crawley, Fire and Ice, Twinkledigitz, the Routines, Eduardo Miller and Anna Smyrk . All of whom were excellent.

During the residency we also did a   Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes show in NSW at GUMBALL and Dave Graney and the mistLY opened for Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds in Melbourne.
Clare Moore  also did shows with the Hungry Ghosts on vibes , the Blackeyed Susans on vibes, the Scientists on drums, the Pink Tiles on drums as well as playing drums as a part of a Linda Ronstadt show with Jane Clifton. The Routines have also been rehearsing and writing regularly. there have also been a couple of gigs as the rhythm section for Harry Howard and the NDE.
It's been a pretty busy time.

I've been in the studio when not playing and have written and recorded quite a few songs.

 .... and a few others. I think we might have an album finished before the end of June. I've been writing a lot of songs. We plan to go into Soundpark for a day or two and record songs with the mistLY.

After the show at the Croxton we have a trip to Ballarat to play  at the Cabaret Club July 7th and then a Dave Graney and Clare Moore show at the Public Cellars Brewery in Croydon July 17th (6pm) . Then we head to Adelaide to play three nights at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Thebarton. AUGUST 10th-12th.

In the lead up to the show last week I appeared on a couple of non mainstream media streams. Its great that people are using the amazing technolgy that is available to broadcast locally, especially when the mainstream media is turning to shit so blatantly.

One was THE PUBCAST SHOW which was filmed upstairs at the Retreat Hotel in Sydney Rd, Brunswick. I spoke about my book WORKSHY and played a couple of acoustic songs. The two other guests were interesting. One, a comedian who had had some problems with drugs and booze and also a film maker who had also had issues with substance abuse. The theme of the particular epsiode was sobriety . You can access the episode via their Facebook Page here. 

The film maker had an interesting background in Melbourne 90s dance culture. Here is a short film he was involved in the writing of,  around a character from the same scene, Big Billy. 

I find the phenomenon of the particular dance from that time to be pretty amazing, THE MELBOURNE SHUFFLE.

I also did an interview with Australian Musicians Radio out of a studio in Ferntree Gully. They broadcast it as well as filmed some for a local tv stream which can be accessed via the YARRA RANGES TV Facebook Page.

Over the last week Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds have been playing around Australia. A fantastic dance band and a portal for many into the underworld once opened up and carved in rock by the Gun Club and the Cramps. Kid Congo can access those songs and tones, as well as playing music from his own recent albums. A really great band. Clare Moore sat in on drums for the Pink Tiles who opened for them in Castlemaine and then we played with them on the 17th at the brand new venue under an older name that is the Caravan Music Club.
Kid lives in Connecticut, bassist Kiki Solis lives in St Louis, drummer Ron Miller lives in Lawrence, Kansas and guitarist Mark Cisneros lives in Washington DC. They stay with friends here and play on hired or borrowed gear and sound stellar every time they jump onto a stage They arrived on a Thursday and played every night for a  week before having one day off. Unstoppable grooves!

Clare Moore and in played with the Gun Club in London at the Lyceum in the Strand in 1983 and later on in Amsterdam and London when Kid was in the band. A friend for life. All of them friends for life. A really great bunch of people.

Yeah, I didn't write it in cursive. 

We rehearsed for our next show and went through some Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes era material. We have played some of that during this run but not a lot as yet. So we are heading toward that stuff now.

We will also be playing some new material that its been great to be working up.

We rehearsed some more of that. A song called "Where's My Buzz?" which took a really great turn in our last run at it. I'm trying to steer away from familiar grooves and songwriting modes I've been stuck in for a while. The song we've been doing called "Is That What You Did?" is the most MAJOR CHORD thing I've done in years. "ULTRAKEEF" is kind of writing itself. People are digging us finding our way through this stuff in public.

I have been working on a song in the studio that I built up from a  drum machine beat and built up some tracks. Again, it's a real MAJOR CHORD job.  There are no electric guitars. I played it all, organ and acoustic guitars, autoharp, harmonica  and bass and the rhythm. Clare found it to be quite disturbingly nutty but has turned around and has now given it the green light. Georgio "the dove" Valentino told us a story of his flight from Detroit to Brussels and how he took his childhood blanket wth him. It was called DouDou. One dark night in a bad bart of Brussels, his car was broken into and DouDou went missing.

I told him right then I needed to write a song called "Et Tu DouDou!" and so I have. I'm still making up my mind whether to put it out as a single track or wait until we record a whole album. It's not a  pop song but its got a lot of drama. 

In other news we have been talking with a couple of labels about putting out some back catalogue stuff. Universal Music in Austraia have been very direct and positive. We might also do something with the album of re-recordings we gave to Liberation in Australia in 2011 and they have been very accommodating too.

We might even do some vinyl, still thinking on it.

Last year we were in touch with Fire Records about the two albums we did with them in the late 80s/very early 90s. When we worked with them it was mainly driven by the owner, Clive Solomon. In the modern era, a fellow called James runs it.

James has been very helpful and sent us a box of vinyl copies of the two albums (My Life On The Plains and I Was The Hunter And I Was The Prey) that he found in the warehouse. The albums are not really available in any form. I asked Clive to just give us the rights to them and call it square but he says its "an important part of the labels story". I can't really dwell on it too much. It just bums me out.

We have those (very limited quantities) vinyl copies of  My Life On The Plains and I Was The Hunter And I Was The Prey available at the shows we are doing. 

We have three more shows coming up at the Croxton Bandroom as well as a show in Ballarat and three shows in Adelaide at the Wheatsheaf.  We may do the latter gigs like these residency shows and make it a  different set each night. 

 Clare Moore and Stuart Perera going through some arrangements and difficult charts for last weeks show in the front room of the Croxton Bandroom. (We call that musical notation #flyshit in the business) 4-6 pm, 607 High St Thornbury. Yes, Clare  pulled out the 50s Boosey and Hawkes jazz set of vibes she bought from a teary widow in Doncaster in 1997. She showed us the cocktail/ party room where she and her late husband would entertain friends and he would play the vibes and they would all dance. We couldn't see them at first, then she opened a purpose built door beneath the cocktail bar and wheeled them out.

 

This was our Primary Colour look last week at the Croxton Bandroom. We were playing as a minimalist trio. Vibes, keys, acoustic and electric guitars so we needed to have a more flash facade than usual. This week Clare Moore will be back behind the kit, Stu Thomas will be at the bass and Stu Perera will be blazing that Rickenbacker. It's Mothers Day so why not run away to come to this show? We play from 4-6 pm in the front room. 607 high st thornbury. Special guests this week are THE ROUTINES who are Jane Dust, Clare Moore and Emily Jarrett.

Thats a lot of brain freezing material! I mean all the words and the arrangements. All that time rolling through my brain as we bring it into some kind of presence in 2018. The band has been amazing.

Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes also played a festival in the Hunter Valley  in NSW on April 28th. In a forest clearing on a lucky fellows property, it was called GUMBALL and was a part of a local ongoing music happening/area called DASHVILLE.



We flew up to Newcastle and were met by Henry, who was going to drive us the rest of the way and also help with gear and mixing us. He'd already picked up Robin Casinader in Sydney (who'd flown there from Canberra). "We" were myself, Clare Moore, Rod Hayward and Stu Thomas.
We came into the festival site and got familiar with the place and the gear we were to use.
I had a chat with Ben Salter and he casually enquired as to what we would do . I said we had a decades worth of classic grooves and moves and it's all compressed into an hour for this show and I pitied the poor cunt who had to follow us. He said that that was actually going to be him. He laughed.
We went on at dusk and absolutely tore the joint up.

We left the stage in flames.

Ben was in a  festival specific collective who played a set of classic rock songs They started off with Stevie Wrights Black Eyed Bruiser.

We were on a  real high after that and were happy to catch a mesmerising set from Rocket Science and another blazing triumph from THE AINTS. Had an absolutely fantastic time of it. Thank you everybody!

The next day we flew back to Melbourne , got into the van and drove to the Croxton, still buzzing and played a fully amped up set to end the first month of Sundays.
